Melanite is the black variety of andradite garnet. It is also called Titanian andradite. Melanite is one of the three varieties of the andradite family. The other two are demantoid and topazolite. Melanite is composed of titanium and manganese. It has a vitreous to metallic luster.
Occurrence
Melanite is found in metamorphic rocks and volcanic lavas. Fine crystals are found on the island of Elba (Italy), Germany, and France.
