Kornerupine is a rare gemstone that was first given its name in 1984. However, it was not until 1912 that gem-quality material was found. Even now it is uncommon and cut only for collectors. Kornerupine gemstone is a strongly pleochroic gem and appears green or reddish-brown when seen from different directions. To show the best color, it is cut with the table facet parallel to the length of the crystal.

Occurrence

Kornerupine is found in Madagascar, Sri Lanka, and East Africa. The latter produces an Emerald-green variety as well. Cat’s eye gems are cut from East African and Sri Lankan gemstones.

Kornerupine gemstone is rare and prized by collectors. It has been confused with tourmaline and enstatite.
