Howlite is a soft, light mineral with a chalky white color. It has black or brown veins throughout the stone. Crystals are occasionally found in groups. It is very porous and may be dyed to imitate other minerals, especially turquoise. Although it is soft, howlite will withstand a polish. So, it is commonly used as a decorative stone. The howlite stone is often found as a massive rough with a light, powdery, and porous surface.
Occurrence
Howlite has been found in large quantities in California, USA.
