Chrysoprase is a translucent variety of chalcedony. It has been used by Greeks and Romans as a decorative stone. Apple-green is the most valued variety of chalcedony. It can be used as an imitation of jade. They green color of chrysoprase is due to the presence of nickel. It may fade in sunlight, and stones may then be confused with fine jade.
Occurrence
Chrysoprase occurs in Poland and Czech Republic/Slovakia. However, since 1965, the best quality material comes from Queensland (Australia). Other localities are Austria, Brazil, Urals (Russia), and California (USA).
