Brazilianite

Brazilianite is a rare and unusual gemstone. It is cut for collectors only due to its low hardness, which is 5½ on the Mohs hardness scale. Brazilianite is yellow or yellowish-green. Its crystals are fragile and brittle, with a conchoidal fracture and perfect cleavage perpendicular to their length.

Brazilianite was found in Minas Gerais in Brazil in 1944. At first, it was thought to be chrysoberyl. However, closer inspection revealed it to be a completely new mineral. It was named after the country in which it was found. Brazilianite is often confused with beryl, topaz, and chrysoberyl. It is common to find a Brazilianite crystal along with apatite crystals in a matrix.
