Azurite is an azure-blue copper mineral, occasionally found as prismatic crystals. These are rarely faceted. However, these occur in massive form inter-grown with malachite. Thus, it is common to find bands of green malachite on the surface of azurite stone. Similarly, it also occurs as dark-blue azurite crystals with green malachite in a host matrix.
Occurrence
Azurite is found in copper-mining areas. These include China, Africa, Austria, and the former USSR. Stones from Chessy, near Lyons in France, are called chessylite.
